It is very plastic and quite light in color when fired. White grog is usually obtained by grinding up china or porcelain rejects. The clay may, when fired, remain soft, open, absorbent and chalky. The kiln consists of a group of beehive-shaped chambers built in a series up the hill. Some fire clays which appear to be very coarse when first mixed with water slake down gradually over a period of time and become, in the well-aged body, fairly smooth and plastic. This does not mean that all pots are works of art, any more than all sculptures or paintings are works of art. Difficult parts were cut with a small knife shaped like a kitchen knife. Most potters will not have the luck to find a single clay with all of these virtues.
