Biography - Susan O'Hara
I was born in
Belgium and came to the U.S. at the age of 11. My teen years were spent in
New York City where I graduated from The High School of Music and Art with a
major in sculpture, but it was not until many years later that my interest
in clay sculpture really developed. It began with an adult education course
at the local high school in New Haven, Connecticut, progressed to the
Creative Arts Workshop, and finally the Guilford Handcrafts Center where I
learned several new techniques of clay sculpture. I entered juried art
shows, first in New Haven and then throughout Connecticut and was accepted
as a member in the prestigious Paint and Clay Club and the Brush and Palette
Club at the John Slade Ely House in New Haven. Throughout those years my
sculptures were awarded several prizes.
In 1987 my husband and I moved to Pennsylvania where I continued my
participation in art classes first at the Chester Springs Studio, with
particular emphasis on terra cotta, more recently at the Abington Art Center
and the Cheltenham Center for the Arts. Within the last few years my
sculptures were accepted at juried art shows at the Main Line Center of the
Arts, the Abington Art Center, the Wayne Art Center where I received an
honorable mention and the Chester County Art Association where I won second
prize. The sculptures were included at the Chester Springs Studio and the
Philadelphia/Tri-State Artists Equity art shows at the Philip and Muriel
Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, The American College in Bryn Mawr,
and the Multiple Choice Gallery of the Montgomery County Community College.
In 2002 one of my sculptures was awarded 3rd prize at the Bucks County
Sculpture Show. My sculptures have been represented by the Merrill Gallery
in West Chester, Eland Gallery in Phoenixville, the Heron Hill Gallery in
Eagle, Petrus Gallery in New Hope, the Upstairs Gallery in Lahaska, and the
Ruth Zafrir Sculpture Gallery in Philadelphia. Several of my pieces are
presently exhibited at the DeBottis Gallery in West Chester and the
Louisa
Melrose Gallery in Frenchtown, NJ.
We recently moved to Brandon, Florida (outside of Tampa) and are excited to
start a new life here.
