A spell of relative affluence in the area is testified by a distinct local pottery production. Most of the dogs belonged to a mixed and varied population. Nevertheless, well-defined breeds occurred in some of the sites. It is impossible to decide whether these breeds - dwarf dogs with a withers height of 25 to 40 centimeters and slender or twisted thick legs on the one hand, and greyhounds with typical, elongated skull and long, slender extremities on the other - were results of intentional local breeding or simply acquired from territories of the Roman Empire.

Gold was an important commodity in the ashanti kingdom of the eighteenth century, and gold gave the whole coast its name. In peru the coast is hot and dry, and in ecuador it is a tropical jungle. It is natural that this revival of interest has been accompanied by an intense curiosity about high temperature bodies, glazes, and firing, and potters have pursued the intricacies of their craft with an intensity which has amounted almost to obsession. In the early years, the artware produced at rookwood used this underglaze technique combined with a smear glaze. There should not be too much of this extremely fine material in a throwing body, and better results are obtained if the grog is screened to eliminate all dust smaller than 80 mesh. Thus the heat is made to pass from chamber to chamber, and a maximum exchange of heat takes place between the flame and the ware being fired.
