To what extent the mingling of cultures has exerted influences on the art is unknown, but as tribes moved from one region to another, there was a very considerable cultural exchange among the natives. All clay body compositions must be formulated with a view to the manner in which the clay is to be fabricated into objects. During an aging period of several months or longer, a bacterial growth occurs in clay which has a beneficial effect on plasticity. The old handmade pots, of staffordshire for example, had an individual charm, a feeling of the rightness of the form for the processes of making, and a certain irregularity which gave to each piece a particular quality all its own.
