But it seems likely that if kiln design had permitted higher temperatures, materials and techniques would have been found to take advantage of them. In design, the mass of factory-made pottery (the same could be said for many other factory-made products of the 19th century) was vulgar, pretentious, imitative, and unsuited either to the methods by which it was made or the uses to which it was put.
