The clay portion of the body must contain a sizable percentage of very plastic clay, either ball clay, a plastic sagger clay, or a plastic stoneware clay. The simplest was the use of matte glazes on incised pieces. Thus the heat is made to pass from chamber to chamber, and a maximum exchange of heat takes place between the flame and the ware being fired. This resulted in outlined shapes filled in with color, much in the style of the french symbolists and, of course, the japanese printmakers, whose work was so popular then in the united states. Fire clays differ widely in the amount of iron they contain, and in the amount of texture they develop on firing, but nearly all fire clays will impart some texture when added to a stoneware body. Van briggle had been experimenting with matte glazes at rookwood before he went to colorado, and the wares produced at his van briggle pottery there have become synonymous with matte glazes.
