The essence of its success lay in the lively use of colour and decorative sense, but there was a complete absence of feeling for monumentality, especially in sculpture. Even the great Cretan palaces, the most imposing achievements, impress by something other than their sheer size.

With this obvious improvement in the ware noted, it would be only natural for the potters to increase the temperature of firing in an effort to obtain still harder and more durable results. The potentials of this freedom, as yet largely unrealized, are significant. Kilns for firing stoneware or porcelain were not commonly available to the studio potter, and most craft potters did not have either an interest in or a knowledge of how to produce high-fired pottery. Leach has had an absorbing interest in the pottery of the past, and his greatest contribution, perhaps, has been to make the techniques and the philosophy of oriental ceramics more available to western potters. Some women needed to support themselves, or in many instances had innovative ideas to offer or aspirations to achieve certain ends, and simply did whatever was necessary to accomplish this. On the other hand, if too much flint is used in the body, it may be found that glazes will shiver and peel.
