The technique of making them had been learned from the Egyptians. There are a few vases which may be direct imports from Egypt, but by and large the shapes and material are Cretan.

A simple test can be made by preparing a sample of dried clay flour and a measure of water which weighs just half as much as the clay. More sodium silicate may be added to test the effect of a higher percentage of deflocculent, but more than 1% usually has the effect of making the slip more viscous rather than making it more fluid.
