Kentucky ball clay is relatively dark in the raw state because of carbonaceous matter in it. In general, less iron, whether introduced into the body as iron oxide or as a red clay, is needed in reduction to produce the darker shades. In reduction, the color of the surface of the clay is often quite different than the color of the clay inside.
