In any event, during the second or third centuries immediately preceding han, the chinese had succeeded in making a ware which was dense, impervious to liquid, and which had a stonelike ring when struck. The resulting surface was textured, for the glaze was thin and matte, and the decoration seemed to float on the surface. Air-floated clays are pulverized to a very fine powder and so are easily mixed or blunged with the other materials in the body. The usual amount of fire clay which is added to plastic stoneware is from 10 to 30%, but if the fire clay is itself quite plastic, up to 50% may be used.
